Tips for Maintaining Your HVAC System

In Home Tips, HVAC, HVAC System, Inspections

Regular and preventative maintenance for HVAC systems helps to ensure that a system is working properly and efficiently throughout the year. Taking care of your HVAC system is especially important leading up to the cold winter season–that last thing you want is to be dealing with a freezing building during the winter, or to have skyrocketing energy bills because the system is not functioning as it should. Below are some tips to help you keep your HVAC system working at its peak performance all year round.

3 Tips for Maintaining an HVAC System

1. Filter maintenance may seem like an obvious step, but many business and homeowners tend to neglect HVAC filters. Make sure to invest in the new high-efficiency filters on the market, and replace it often (about every 90 days). Also take the time to inspect the filter each month. If it looks dirty or if there are pets in the building or home, it’s a good idea to change it each month.

2. We recommend hiring a professional HVAC maintenance inspector to do a review of your HVAC system before the start of each season. A professional will help do the maintenance needed to align extend the life of the HVAC equipment and achieve optimal efficiency. For example, they can help to un-clog the condenser coil in order to improve operating efficiency, and inspect and clean the wiring to make sure the system is operating safely.

3. If you have an exterior HVAC system, during the spring, summer, and fall months it’s a good idea to weekly clear the system of fallen leaves and twigs to prevent blockage or clogging. Also clear the area for two feet surrounding the system to help prevent debris from building up against the system.
