Ensure Your HVAC is Working with Preventative Maintenance

 In Building Automation

While hiring a professional HVAC company to inspect and do maintenance on your system twice yearly is essential, there are things you can do in the meantime. Their thing is to inspect and clean the wiring and mechanisms of the unit, which is stuff you don’t wanna mess around trying to clean. Below are a few things that the average person can (and should) do to keep their HVAC system working smoothly.

Air Filters

So many business and homeowners neglect HVAC filters. You’ll want to invest in the newest high-efficiency filters on the market and replace it every 90 days. Check the filter on a monthly basis and, if it looks dirty, replace the filter each month.

Keep Your HVAC Clear

Keep your outdoor AC and heat units clear of debris. This is most important during the spring and fall when there are lots of leaves, pollen, and grass flying around between yards. There should also be a two foot clearing around the units.

Don’t Let These Tasks Slip Your Mind

There are plenty of tasks to keep you busy in your automated home or office annually, these are the ones that could easily fall by the wayside. During the summer, the water to the furnace humidifier should be turned off and, in the late fall or early winter, the humidifier filter should be replaced and turned back on. Annually, pour a cup of bleach mixed with water down the air-conditioner condensate drain, this is to prevent the buildup of mold and algae.

As well as the above tips, make sure to replace the battery in your home’s carbon monoxide detector once a year. It will be more difficult to miss because it will screech at you until you fix it.
